In my classroom I know there are some students who are far from the Beaver Cleavers of the world. I have several students who have an older sibling that insures they get to school on time. I have other students who are 4th graders who are responsible for insuring their younger siblings get off the bus and together they are latchkey kids.
I think maybe 3 of my kids come from a family that is the 'nuclear family' model. I have students from single family homes, step-families, and several being raised by grandparents.
This activity made me a little more aware of what it really is like in my classroom.
I'M DISGUSTED

It's sad that they have so much to deal with at home before they come to school.
I had a student in 3rd grade who was the "Mom" of the family. Her mom kept having babies and she was in charge of them as they got older. When she got to school all she wanted to do was play... and I didn't blame her.
Sometimes I wish I could go back in time to teach good old Beaver. His parents supported the school and he knew Mom would be home when he got there, and if I needed to call Mom I knew where to find her. Oh for the good old days!!
